With the integration of computers and tablets in my classrooms during middle and high school, technology has played a key role in my decision to enter the burgeoning field of biomedical engineering.
Through classes like Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles, I have realized the vast applications computer science holds across various professional careers. Most notably, the use of computer science and coding in engineering and medicine inspires me to further explore this niche during my undergraduate studies. With the use of artificial intelligence and deep neural networks, I aim to enter a career in which I can revolutionize medicine with the use of technology.
Using artificial intelligence, I aim to utilize diagnostic imaging for radiology, diabetic retinopathy screening, and treatment decision guidance from neural networks. For instance, artificial intelligence in radiology recognize three-dimensional shapes and textures of tumors from x-rays and magnetic resonance imaging. Using this biological data from radiology input, artificial intelligence supplies quantitative data to diagnose pathogenesis of cancer.
Engineering models in conjunction with biological stimuli (the patient) allow artificial intelligence to boost the efficiency and precision of surgical systems. Today’s scientific advancements have revolutionized the complexities of open-heart, lymphatic, and spinal surgeries. In addition, artificial intelligence’s ability to interpret genetic data through machine learning analysis poses an increased likelihood of successful treatment at the individual level. By stretching to engineering through structural mapping and biological stimuli, artificial intelligence serves as an interdisciplinary field, capable of revamping the existing healthcare system. As seen through artificial intelligence, today’s science reaches across vast disciplines to transfigure disease prediction and advance patient care in a data-driven manner.
